Unusual furnace odour
A brief dust smell at first seasonal start differs from persistent smoke, burning plastic or fuel odours.
What to observe
Note onset, duration, location, fault lights and whether a CO alarm activated.
A field example
A short first-use dusty smell is not the same as persistent burning-plastic or fuel odour. Duration and location matter, and an alarm or suspected gas smell changes the response immediately.
What the written work should say
Persistent or strong odour warrants shutdown and qualified assessment; use emergency response for gas smell or alarms.
Where this task stops
Do not sell scent treatment in place of identifying electrical, fuel or venting causes.
