Deep guide · Ducts

When duct cleaning has evidence behind it

The strongest reasons for duct assessment are observed substantial deposits, material released into rooms, pest evidence or significant visible biological growth on appropriate surfaces. A dusty grille by itself is common and can be cleaned without paying for every hidden branch. The U.S. EPA states that routine duct cleaning is not generally recommended and that health claims are not established.

The useful observation

Ask a bidder to show where the condition exists and what material the duct is made from. Metal, flexible and internally insulated ducts differ. Wet insulation may need removal and replacement, with the water source fixed first. Pest contamination requires exclusion and careful handling rather than a single deodorizing pass. Renovation debris may be limited to affected openings.

What a good scope includes

A whole-system quote should identify supply and return trunks, branches, grilles, access openings and air-handler protection. Source removal and capture prevent loosened dust from being pushed into living areas. Request before-and-after images at identifiable access points, plus an explanation of inaccessible sections. A quick hose at one register is not proof that the entire system was cleaned.

Where the boundary sits

Compare at least two scopes and ask for exclusions. A separately priced furnace inspection, coil service or repair is not automatically included in duct cleaning. Cleaning only makes sense after the mechanism that introduced debris has been corrected where possible.
